All I can say is WOW!!!
BookWagon turns new page on reading readiness
Regional Library bus will serve preschoolers in 5 counties
By Wayne Risher (Contact)Monday, April 14, 2008
First Regional Library's Words on Wheels (WOW) BookWagon will hit the road for the first time this week with stops at schools and child development centers.
Pre-school classes at Hernando Elementary School will be the first stop, at 9:30 a.m. today.
The BookWagon is a new mobile service of the library system's early childhood education initiative. It will be unveiled during National Library Week and the Week of the Young Child.
After a story time with teacher Lane Carter's pre-schoolers, the converted 28-foot Bluebird bus will be open for public tours at 10:30 a.m.
First Regional received the bus from the Hancock County Public Library. It provided library services to residents of Pearlington on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina knocked out their library.
It originated as a Bookmobile with the Allegany County Public Library in Cumberland, Md., in the early 1990s.
The BookWagon will travel a circuit of day cares, preschools and Head Starts in the five counties served by Hernando-based First Regional.
The early childhood initiative, directed by Victoria Penny, seeks to improve reading readiness and skills among preschoolers.
Penny, early childhood services coordinator, previously used a library van to cart books and other materials to child development centers.
For more information about the BookWagon, contact Penny at First Regional's Early Childhood Resource Center, (662) 429-4439, extension 101, or e-mail: vpenny@first.lib.ms.us.
